After the referee blows the whistle, it is done: The u13-team of the Storm Soccer Academy did it again; A 2;1 win in the final of the zonal Milo Champions League in Accra brings Storm the qualification for the national championship. Having reached the final round is nothing new for chairman Awal Yusif. In the past five years, he could even win the trophy in 2013. All in All, his teams are playing the final now for the third time. But how did we get here and how did it all begin? What is the secret of the academy's success?
Actually, the history does not start in Bepong, the home of the academy. It once started in Kumasi, the Ashanti capital. A city, where football is highly honored and loved, where thousands of young players are training on dusty and stony pitches in order to receive an agents' attention for a better future at an international club. One of these players was Awal Yusif. A talented play-making midfielder, who has unbreakable love for the game. Unless his talent is distinctive, the big step to an international career did not happen. Today he is certain about the reason:'I did not get the support from my background that i would have needed. My parents and teachers did not want me to play football, so i could not do it.' But the feeling of disappointment quickly turned into a new feeling of motivation.
The motivation of helping young children, especially from poor financial backgrounds, to fulfill their dreams of a professional football career. In order to achieve that, he decided to start his own academy in 2012. For the foundation of good work, he had to leave the heart of Kumasi. The search of good climate circumstances brought him to the east of Ghana, to the mountains of Kwahu. Lower temperatures, fresh air and a quite surrounding were the arguments to start the academy in the small town of Bepong. There, he talked to the local authorities about his plans of developing young talented children through the combination of football and education.
With the authorities confirmation, the plans turned reality. Round about 20 players around the age of 12 years were joining Awal Yusif to Bepong. After the fist time the u13-team played the first matches, the first victories could be achieved. Apart from that, the chairman started local scoutings in the upper volta region. Next to the amount of players, also the players' qualities started to improve and increase. After two years, the first small trophies were brought to Kwahu, like the Nunu Cup. The academy started to expand their local scouting to a national level. Young players from the northern, western or central regions were convinced by the academy's philosophy.
Not just on the pitch, also apart from football, the academy made progressive moves. A partnership with the german organisation 'worldwide volunteers' since 2013 ensures german coaches coming to Ghana for one year in order to coach a juvenile team. From time to time, the academy became more and more professional. A real highlight in the five year old academies' history was the win of the national u13 Milo-Games in 2015. The development of the young talents also paid off as well as the quality of the senior team was improving continual. In the season 2013/2014, the seniors promoted to the second division. Taking into account that the average age of the senior players is less than 20 years underlines the talent of the players.
As a consequence to the good performances, other clubs from higher ghanian divisions and other countries paid attention to the academy and its' teams. Today, a couple of players who started their career at Storm play in the Ghana Premier League, South Africa, Sudan, Belarus or Belgium. As a main motivation for the future, the academy aims to give more players the chance of suceeding abroad.
